What NATO bills?
Not only are there no bills, but the countries in most danger are more than paying their share
Former president and current defendant in numerous criminal and civil cases Donald Trump recently made would should have been a shocking announcement - that not only would a US where he was commander in chief live up to its NATO obligations with respect to countries that didn’t ‘pay their bills’, but that he would actively encourage others to attack them. This is not ‘reading between the lines, either - as Reuters reports it:
”No, I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them (Russia) to do whatever the hell they want. You gotta pay”
As Reuters is kind enough to point out, there are no NATO dues to speak of. Trump is probably complaining that European countries do not spend enough of their budget on defense - NATO countries are in theory supposed to allocate 2% of their GDP to defense spending. And indeed some of them fall short of this goal. But does this truly indicate that they are failing the task of NATO, and does Trump’s threat mean anything?
